Make East Yorks an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” -MP
Greg, who has long been campaigning for the Yorkshire Wolds and parts of East Yorkshire to be designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB) has renewed his calls to Natural England for this to take place.
Sir Greg said: “It is clear to anyone living in, or visiting our region, that the Yorkshire Wolds and the surrounding area is outstandingly beautiful and this should be designated in law. The Yorkshire Wolds boast numerous characteristics which are of particular significance, including special geological features and unspoiled landscapes which have inspired artists such as David Hockney.
An “AONB” designation would protect our natural local environment, while bringing benefits in terms of increased tourism. It is essential that present and future generations should all be able to appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty of our East Yorkshire countryside for years to come. AONB status would ensure this.
Greg says: “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status gives the local authority a duty to manage the area to preserve its beauty and to restrict unwelcome developments. It is now long overdue for East Yorkshire to be so designated.”
