Greg Hails “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” Announcement
Greg has welcomed the announcement that the Yorkshire Wolds and parts of East Yorkshire are to be officially proposed as a new ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB) after a long battle.
The news follows nearly a decade of campaigning by Sir Greg, local councillors, and others.
In 2012, Sir Greg first raised the issue with the Environment Minister calling for AONB status for the Yorkshire Wolds and since then Sir Greg and local East Riding councillors have maintained their long-running campaign.
Now, the Environment Secretary has announced that Natural England will officially consider the designation of two new AONBs – the Yorkshire Wolds and the Cheshire Sandstone Ridge.
If all goes to plan, the Yorkshire Wolds will be the first new AONB created since 1995.
Sir Greg said: “I am delighted with this announcement which now progresses the campaign to its final stage. It is clear to anyone living in, or visiting our region, that the Yorkshire Wolds and the surrounding area is outstandingly beautiful and this announcement is entirely appropriate, if overdue.
“The designation will protect the local natural environment and bring a boost to our tourism. It means present and future generations will be able to appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty of our East Yorkshire countryside for all time.”
