MP WELCOMES CONSULTATION ON WOLDS STATUS
East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight has welcomed the announcement from Natural England that they are to consult on making part of the Yorkshire Wolds an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. The news follows proposals, backed by Sir Greg and local councillors, which were announced last year.
Designation could bring many benefits, including attracting additional funding to help manage the area, raising awareness of what is important about the Wolds and safeguarding a nationally important landscape from inappropriate development.
Sir Greg is encouraging local residents to have their say as Natural England assesses the Yorkshire Wolds potential for the AONB designation.
Sir Greg said: “The Yorkshire Wolds is a stunning landscape known for steep sided dry dales, dramatic coastal cliffs, and rolling hills.
Over the years there have been a number of attempts to exploit parts of the area with inappropriate development which would have ruined the landscape which would have diminished the area’s natural beauty. If the Yorkshire Wolds receives designation as an AONB -and this brings it a stage closer- it will help safeguard it for future generations”.
A final decision is expected in 2023 and people can have their say by visiting: https://www.yorkshire-wolds-designation-project.org
